Why can’t I get pregnant

It is so ironic that while there are a lot of unwanted pregnancies, there are a number of women who want to have babies are having a difficult time getting pregnant. The question they often ask is why can’t I get pregnant? Some have been trying for years to conceive, leading to disappointment and depression if success has not been achieved. Women get emotional because of the frustration of not conceiving despite so much effort. Others keep on having miscarriages. It is important to know the several factors that affect the chances of conceiving in order to gain better chances of success.

One of the factors which answer to the question why can’t I get pregnant is the age of the woman trying to conceive since the probability of infertility rises as the age increases. It is a medical fact that during the mid-twenties when fertility is at its peak for birth sexes, and declines for women over thirty and men over the age of forty. Also, tubal infections and other causes of infertility are prevalent for older women. Another factor is when there is a low sperm count of the woman’s partner because chances of becoming pregnant rises if there is a high sperm count. Men reach their sexual peak when they are between 18-30 years of age. Having polycystic ovaries among other factors may also affect the chances of conceiving. This is a condition when a woman has a hormonal imbalance which produces small cysts in the ovaries leading to a difficulty in conceiving.

Apart from the aforementioned factors, the woman’s lifestyle can also affect the chances of conceiving. Having a healthy pregnancy diet like taking vitamins and eating leafy greens is important. Weight may also be factor since being overweight and underweight causes a woman to lose her period, hence her fertility is affected. Men’s sperm can also be affected due to weight issues so both partners should stay fit and healthy. Drugs also affect the chances of conception since they can be very harmful to the woman’s body and can also harm the baby.

There several ways to enhance the probability of conception and to prevent miscarriage as well. Among others are staying healthy and fit, using methods of tracking the ovulation and knowing the fertile days, avoiding stress, and trying to conceive at the ages where fertility is at its peak. Another way is to have regular sex. Also the use certain sexual positions during intercourse that will increase the chances of conception and avoid certain others. Some experts suggest the missionary position in trying to conceive since it allows deep penetration which places the sperm close to the cervix. Rear entry and side by side lying are also suggested by experts to be effective sexual positions.

However if despite these natural methods, the woman still asks why can’t I get pregnant, there is still no reason to lose hope. According to statistics, healthy couples who conceive in a month’s time comprise of 25%, within 6 months – 60%, and in a year 90%. Pregnancy does take some time and patience to get results. It is also noted that 40% of couples undergo some kind of fertility treatment while in the process of trying to conceive.

It is a different issue if one of the couples or both have health or infertility problems. Both partners should consult a fertility specialist and have them subjected to examination. It is recommended to consult a doctor because he can determine the exact cause of infertility, explain it very well to the couple, and for them to receive the right treatment. Statistics show that 9 out of 10 cases of infertility can be remedied by drugs and surgery.

Treatment for infertility depends upon the condition of the woman or her partner. When a woman has problems with her ovulation, the doctor may recommend the drug called clomiphene. This is a pill which improves the chances of getting pregnant because stimulates the ovaries to release eggs. However, if the woman has the condition of having polycystic ovary syndrome, a different drug called metformin must be taken with clomiphene. If this fails, daily hormone shots at the beginning of the menstrual cycle are another option.  The couple must first weigh the benefits and risks before proceeding treatment. When the problem is that the infertility cannot be explained sometimes the doctor might suggest insemination which is putting the sperm directly into the uterus. Another different condition such as blocked or damaged fallopian tubes which can prevent the egg from being fertilized by the sperm, in this case tubal surgery is the remedy for such damage.

Male infertility can also be the problem in conceiving, since it has been estimated that 30-40% of problems in conceiving is due to such male infertility. For male infertility, a semen analysis is usually done. Insemination is the first option but if it does not work. This is where the doctor injects the sperm into the egg and if there is fertilization, the doctor puts the embryo into the uterus, much like an in vitro fertilization. In vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection expensive remedies, but sure are worth it especially for couples who really want to have a baby of their own. Vasectomy reversal is another procedure for men who have previously had a vasectomy and then change their minds and want to try conceiving a baby with their partner.

Although couples seem to be healthy, thus making the woman wonder why can’t I have a baby, there are some signs and symptoms that cannot be easily detected by a common person. Professional opinion is often needed. Fortunately, we live in the modern times; hence medical breakthroughs help increase the chances of having a baby. Help is within everyone’s reach so the couple should not give up easily. If all else fails, adoption is also an option which the couple may consider. After all, experiencing parenthood is very rewarding for a lot of people.
